- Family Immigration Pattern
Of Joseph’s four children, just two immigrated to North America. Eliezar immigrated through the Port of Halifax with his son Julius in 1924. This information is documented in a US-Canada border crossing Eliezar made in 1926 when he and his son Hyman went to visit Eliezar’s brother Gedalia in DC.
Gedalji Deckelbaum (#P13) arrived at the Port of Philadelphia Passenger on December 13, 1904. He was a 30-year old married laborer. His last place of residence was London, where he had lived for 2 months. His destination in America was to his brother-in-law, Benjamin Kolker, at 108 E. Pratt Street in Baltimore. His passage was paid by his brother-in-law.
Gedalia (#P57) returned to Rafalovka sometime between 1904 and 1913. He returned to America on June 29, 1913 through the port of Baltimore. At that time he described himself as a 40-year old married tailor, 5’3" tall, fair complexion, brown hair. His nearest relative in the country from where he came was his wife Bassie Deckelbaum (in "Sachwalowka".) His destination in America was to his nephew, S. Deckelbaum, at 1158 19th Street in Washington, DC. He paid for the passage himself, and he had $24 in his pocket.
The passenger record for Leiser Dekelboim (#P46) shows him arriving to the port of NY on July 23, 1910 aboard the S.S. Campania. He was 25 years old, occupation joiner. His last residence was Kowel, he was born in Kowel, and his nearest relative whom he left behind was his wife "Huide Dekelboun", in Kowel. His destination in America was to his cousin L. Desgun at 7 4th Avenue in New Brighton. Travelling with Lazar was Jossel Resnick.

Abraham Deckelbaum (P#64) arrived at the port of New York on December 17, 1913 aboard the S.S. Bremen. He was a 20-year old single tailor. His birthplace and last residence was Rafalovka. The name of the nearest relative he left behind was his father Leiser (Eliezar) Deckelbaum in Rafalovka. His destination in America was to his cousin Leiser Deckelbaum at 209 York, in Jersey City.
The New York passenger record for Gersh Dekelborin (#P58) shows him arriving on July 20, 1913 aboard the S.S. Kursk. He was 22, single, occupation joiner. His birthplace and his last residence were in Rafalvoka. The nearest relative he left behind was his father Avraham Deckelbaum in Rafalovka. His destination in America was to his brother L. Dekelboim at 272 First Street in New Brighton. His passage was paid by his brother. The name of the nearest relative they left behind was their "aquaintance" Abraham Melamedik in Manewitschi. Their destination in America was to Basie’s husband Gedalie at 912 E Pratt Street in Baltimore.

Joseph’s son Avraham died in the Holocaust. During the war, the jews of Rafalovka were all moved to a ghetto in the next town which was 12 kilometers from Rafalovka (called Novo-Rafalovka). On the 28th of August, 1942, the ghetto was surrounded and all the Jewish population were all led to Socha-vola where there was a ditch. This is where Avraham, his daughter Bat-Sheva, and his grandaughter Zipporah died. Avraham was very old - in his mid-nineties - and he rode to the ditch in a cart. Gedaliah filed his Declaration of Intention to become an American citizen on October 3, 1919 in Maryland. At that time his address was 48 Albermarle Street in Baltimore. He was 47 years old, a tailor, 5’4" tall, 150 lbs, black hair, brown eyes with no distinctive marks. His wife Bessie was still living in Russia. The petition says he was born on October 17, 1872 in Rafolovka. Gedalia marked an "X" for his signature. The declaration was witnessed by Harry S. Glanville. Gedaliah’s wife Bessie died January 12, 1960 in Silver Spring, Maryland. Her death certificate says that she was born in 1878 and that her father’s name was Itzik Malamedick. The 1920 Census shows Louis Dekelbaum, age 35, living at 38 Pine in New York with his wife Ida (age 35), and his sons Isidore (age 10), Samuel (age 9), and Hyman (age 5).
